Exercises To Calm Your Anxious Thoughts

Happy smiling woman with curly hair lounging on couch.

Every day we face environmental demands, a new situation, a new thought, or a challenge to deal with. when we don’t know the full facts or the outcome. we create one based on previous history and experience, be that good or bad.

Do you fear the unknown?

Do you plug the gaps and lose yourself in your thoughts, expanding the unknown outcome to get any result?

Problem-solving, reality testing and impulse control are all eroded by an unbalanced stress tolerance affecting your ability to adapt and respond functionally when faced with a challenge.

Physical movement or exercises can help us shift our unsettled minds and create a relaxed and calm emotional state - exercising releases endorphins, reducing the signs and symptoms of stress and making you feel better in progress.

Create a daily routine to help you adapt to pressures when they arise. Find a quiet moment during the day and try these few exercises.

Progressive relaxation techniques (Jacobson, 1987)

1. Lie down on your back, close your eyes, and clench your fists tight for 10 seconds. Focus on the tensions in your hands. ease your grip and place your palms up, noticing the sensations that occur.

2. Try this again, BUT this time curl your biceps and forearms for the same amount of time -telling yourself that you are becoming more relaxed every time.

3. Proceed to wrinkle your facial muscles and then continue your shoulders, chest, stomach, back, buttocks, thighs, lowers legs and feet.

4. Once completed, lie still for a few minutes and. Allow yourself to feel the sensations throughout your body.

Do this daily for a few weeks and notice your ability to respond to challenges appropriately.

These exercises are simple and can be done anywhere, providing you can make the time and space to relax fully.
