Witnessing the Transformation of Success as a Coach: Jane’s Journey

As a coach, one of the most rewarding experiences is seeing the transformation that happens when a client reaches their potential and succeed in ways they may not have thought possible. Witnessing change unfold before your eyes, being part of the journey, and supporting someone through their challenges is what coaching is all about. It’s not just about reaching goals—it’s about self-discovery, growth, and empowerment. The process is different for everyone, but one common theme I’ve noticed in many clients is a shift in mindset and confidence.

The story of Jane, a client I had the privilege of coaching, exemplifies the power of this shift. She came to me at a crucial juncture in her life, when she was preparing for something that could change her life forever. But like many people, she had doubts about her abilities and lacked the confidence to truly believe in her potential.

Jane’s Story: At the Crossroads of Self-Doubt -

Jane approached me because she was at a crossroads. She had been working for her company for years and had developed a strong skill set, already in a leadership position. Her colleagues admired her work and her leadership and she had a wealth of experience that set her apart from others in her field.

Despite this, she was overwhelmed with self-doubt. A significantly higher leadership position had opened up in her organisation—one that would propel her career to new heights. The promotion would not only increase her responsibilities but also drastically change her situation and the quality of her life. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, yet Jane hesitated. She felt she wasn’t ready. The voice in her head told her she wasn’t good enough, even though her professional accomplishments said otherwise, as did her line management.

In our first few sessions, Jane expressed her fears clearly. She worried that if she applied for the role and failed, it would reinforce the negative beliefs she held about herself. She questioned her leadership capabilities, and doubted her ability to navigate a higher-stakes environment, This self-doubt held her back from embracing the possibilities in front of her. Jane was a self-aware and socially aware individual, jane had done a lot of self-development work already - but something was missing.

The Coaching: Unpacking the Fear and Building Confidence

Through our sessions, it became evident that Jane’s lack of confidence was deeply rooted in past experiences. She had internalised negative situations she had experienced years ago, and it was now shaping her current reality.

My role as a coach was to help her confront these beliefs, challenge the narratives she was telling herself, and begin the process of reshaping her mindset. We started by exploring her strengths, values and beliefs and what had led her to this opportunity in the first place.

I asked her to reflect on her journey and list the achievements of which she was most proud. Slowly, we began to build a foundation where she could see that she wasn’t just ‘lucky’ or ‘in the right place at the right time,’ but that her skills and hard work had played a direct role in her success.

A key part of the coaching process was teaching Jane to reframe her fears. We discussed the idea that fear is a natural part of growth, and instead of seeing it as something that holds us back, we can use it as a guide.

In Jane’s case, the fear of failure was really about her stepping outside her comfort zone. The reality was that she had already been operating at a high level—this new position was simply a continuation of the work she was already doing.

The Turning Point: Applying for the Position

One day, Jane came into a session with a different energy. She had been reflecting on everything we had discussed, and something had shifted. She realised that she had been limiting herself by focusing on her perceived weaknesses and inner critic rather than her undeniable strengths. She had decided to apply for the position. Jane was still nervous, but her mindset had changed. She was no longer consumed by the fear of failure.

Instead, she began to embrace the idea that she deserved this opportunity and that she was capable of handling whatever challenges might come her way.

We discussed the interview preparation and crafting a narrative that highlighted her unique qualifications, knowledge, skills and leadership style.

This involved practising how she could communicate her values confidently and with clarity. Jane’s confidence grew session by session, and I could see her transforming into someone who not only believed in her potential but also recognised that she had the right to succeed.

Witnessing the Change: Jane’s Success

Today, When Jane came back to tell me that she had been offered the position, I could hear the change in her immediately. She was radiant.

The promotion had not only changed her career but had altered the way she saw herself. The doubts that had once held her back had been replaced by a sense of empowerment. What was most profound about Jane’s transformation wasn’t just the external success—it was the internal shift that had taken place. She had learned to silence the inner critic and replace it with self-belief.

The promotion was the result of her hard work and dedication, but the confidence she gained from the process was what would continue to propel her forward.

The Ripple Effect of Transformation Jane’s story is just one example of the power of coaching and the transformative change that can happen when someone begins to believe in their potential.

As a coach, witnessing this change is what drives me. It’s a reminder that we are all capable of so much more than we realise, and sometimes all we need is the right support to unlock our full potential.

Success is not just about reaching a destination—it’s about the journey of growth, self-awareness, and empowerment. When clients like Jane achieve their goals, it’s a win not only for them but for everyone around them who benefits from their newfound confidence and strength.
